MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran, on her journey through Afghanistan. She is at odds with her family over the death of her best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales), a girlfriend from the military. Despite the stubbornness of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the scheming of an unexpected love interest, Merritt’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo isolated from the world. Meanwhile, Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) – who is holed up in the family’s ancestral lake house – is starting to drift and needs the one thing he refuses to give up… help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complicated ways of dealing with grief.
