After the events of Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, takes the stage to seize control of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Aside from a Bat-signal in the final shot of the season finale, we never got our first glimpse of Robert Pattinson in “The Penguin.” In this short video, IMDb attempts to answer: Where the hell was Batman? Colin Farrell fought hard to get his own smoking-tobacco version of The Penguin in Batman (2022), but he failed. However, in his own series, the character is depicted as an occasional tobacco user who prefers cigars. The DC Studios logo is placed in a seedy Gotham alley. The umbrella falls, and the logo is changed to the Warner Bros. logo. Graham Norton’s show stars: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). The first episode is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’s ‘The Penguin’. Batman and I imagine those who haven’t seen the latter will be a bit lost. But I watched Batman a while ago, and this show did an admirable job of quickly picking me up where the movie left off without getting bogged down in a didactic recap. It also perfectly recaps the film’s aesthetic and dark tone, though the show has far more moments of sly levity than the film. As in Batman, Colin Farrell does a great job portraying the Penguin as a stereotypical mob “street guy”: rude, crude, animalistic, and quick to violence; but also smart, cunning, and able to read people. The character may have nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right. I have my doubts about a show that gives the Penguin a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if The Penguin’s machinations will be enough to sustain an entire season. But so far it’s off to a great start.
