Synopsis
Mismatched cousins reunite for a road trip across Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a different turn when old tensions between the odd couple surface over their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the place is where Jesse Eisenberg’s real ancestors settled as immigrants. Benji Kaplan: We stay moving, we stay light, we stay agile. Benji Kaplan: The conductor comes, takes our tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. David Kaplan: To the bathroom. Benji Kaplan: He gets to the back of the train, starts heading to the front, looking for stragglers. David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we stragglers?

By the time he gets to the front of the train, the train will be at the station and we’ll be home free. David Kaplan: This is so fucking stupid. Tickets are probably about twelve bucks.Benji Kaplan: It’s a matter of principle. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. I went into this movie with some hope, expecting a compelling story and at least decent performances.
However, that hope quickly evaporated
The trailer was intriguing, suggesting a plot with depth and potential twists. What I found was an empty shell of what could have been a decent movie, poorly executed in almost every way.First, let’s talk about the so-called “plot.” Yes, there was a basic story, but it seemed to be held together by a thread. The concept may have been promising on paper, but in execution it’s completely directionless. Scenes drag on without adding any depth, and there’s no real sense of pace or urgency. The film can’t decide what it wants to be or where it’s going, which left me feeling lost and, quite frankly, frustrated. Even when I tried to engage with what was happening, the weak script and nonsensical plot twists made it nearly impossible. Then there’s the acting, which was another big letdown. I’m not sure if it’s entirely the actors’ fault or if the direction simply lacked vision, but I’ve rarely seen such soulless performances.
The dialogue was another weak point
The characters were cardboard cutouts, devoid of any believable emotion or depth. It felt like the actors didn’t even want to be there, like they were sleepwalking through their roles. The emotional moments — where you’d expect at least a spark — were flat and unconvincing, as if they’d given up on trying to convey any real feeling. It’s as if the actors had been told to be as uninspired as possible, and they carried that instruction to a fault. I could barely bring myself to care about any of the characters because they seemed to have no concern for themselves. The lines seemed forced and clunky, with characters saying platitudes or nonsensical statements that only added to the confusion. It was as if the writer had thrown a few random words together and called it a day. Not only were the lines poorly written, but the actors seemed to have difficulty delivering them in a way that sounded natural.
Another major issue was the pacing
Conversations that were supposed to be meaningful ended up feeling staged and awkward. It got to the point where I would actively cringe during certain scenes, dreading the next line because I knew it would only drag the scene down even more. The movie dragged on and on, and scenes felt unnecessary, which only made things worse. Every time I thought it was almost over, I would check the time and see there was so much more to come. It was torturous, almost as if the filmmakers were deliberately testing the audience’s patience. Instead of building tension or creating suspense, the film simply wasted time.
