white characters too
Synopsis
Background actor Willis Wu witnesses a crime in Chinatown while working on a TV show. During the investigation, he uncovers a criminal network and lives the life in the spotlight he’s dreamed of. At the beginning of the series, Willis (Jimmy O. Yang), Fatty (Ronny Chieng), and Carl (Chau Long) see Detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) on TV and discuss her possible ethnicity: Carl states that she “looks Thai”, but Fatty declares, “Dude, she’s definitely Korean. Get to know your Asians.” Bennet is actually the child of a white mother and a Chinese father. Early in his acting career, he changed his last name from Wang to Bennet (his father’s first name) after encountering casting agents who said they couldn’t cast him for Asian or Asian-American roles, but his name ruled him out of consideration.
"Inside Chinatown" is different
I usually know within an episode if I’m going to stick with the show. After watching 2 episodes, the jury is still out. So, what is this show about? The themes (so far) seem to be: what happens when we suffer personal defeat, how to provide support to others, and exploring the meaning and possibilities of our lives. This highly stylized show is a mix of fantasy, satirical comics, and slick Hollywood set pieces. For some viewers, the combination will work.
You be the judge
For others, it will be sensory overload. Does this show go beyond the impression and captivate the viewer? First, some positives: excellent set and lighting. A quirky, impactful score sets the tone. Overall, the cast is on point, but some of the characterizations fall flat, primarily due to the direction. My favorite characters are Jimmy O.
Give me a break!
Yang as Willis (in the central role), his friend Fatty (Ronny Chieng), and Jimmy’s father (Tzi Ma). One big drawback for me: the writing is uneven. There are some genuinely funny moments, but certain scenes go overboard with the physical gags. One example is when Willis tries to enter a building…it takes too long. A few minor elements are frustrating: the amount of stuff stuck in the darkened houses of several Chinese characters is ridiculous. So they look like hoarders just because they live in an older, cramped building in a seedy part of town?

Also: the heavy makeup on the female detective (played by Lisa Gilroy) is applied too perfectly, transcending the stereotype of the typically attractive female detective. The new season of “Silo” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of the month.
