Amazon’s original pitch for the television rights to JRR
Synopsis
An epic drama set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ follows a cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ cast and a host of actors who have transformed themselves completely for their roles. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ novel was meant to make the series a new adaptation of the latter (a true retelling of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)), but Tolkien’s estate rejected this proposal. Amazon eventually acquired the rights on the condition that the series differ from Peter Jackson’s previous adaptations and not contradict anything Tolkien had previously written.
Dubbing titles for several languages incorrectly list King Durin III as “Durin II”
Early ideas proposed included prequels featuring characters such as Aragorn, Gimli and Gandalf, but the showrunners preferred to focus on important untold events from the novels. tradition, not simple side stories, so they agreed with the studio that the series would take place over the course of the books. Another era. Since they did not have the rights to Tolkien’s ‘The Silmarillion,’ ‘Unfinished Tales’ and ‘A History of Middle-earth’ (which explore the First and Second Ages), they combed through the Lord of the Rings novels and supplements for passages and references to the Second Age in which to place their story. The company and several experts in Tolkien lore (including his nephew and novelist Simon Tolkien) were consulted regarding the inclusion of new characters and plot elements..
Tolkien’s ‘The Silmarillion’
The opening title is a musical sequence of matter forming shapes, based on the "Music of the Ainur" creation myth from J.R.R. Featured in The Critical Drinker: The Rings of Power – War For A Fandom (2022). Review after 2 episodes: Zero Tolkien vibes. The writing and dialogue are incredibly bad, ffs how can you ruin the most important aspect with such amazing source material. With such a huge budget you would at least expect the graphics to be amazing.
But even she can’t work magic with a terrible script
A few good shots here and there, but mostly generic fantasy backgrounds. The CG looks expensive and fancy, but at the same time bland and generic. It looks like they tried to rip off parts of the original LOTR trilogy (this is ridiculously obvious), took apart the Silmarillion, put it back together, and executed it poorly to boot. Galadriel seems to be cast quite well, salvaging what little was salvageable. All the other actors are, so far at least, mediocre at best.
There are so many weird plot decisions that either make no sense or seem super rushed and uninspired
The writers, or whoever cast them, really and completely squandered the opportunity to bring a more epic Tolkien to the screen. I really, really hope this was just a bad start, maybe they were struggling to introduce the world to a wider audience, trying to attract non-Tolkien fans, and it actually starts at episode 3, but there’s some faith left. Watch the cast of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in all their iconic roles, from Morfydd Clark in Saint Maud to Benjamin Walker in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and more.
