Synopsis

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and oldest events – the election of a new Pope – he finds himself at the centre of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Diehz’s first major film appearance, having previously appeared only in two short student films. He was an architect by profession until 2020, when his last child left home and he decided to take up a new hobby: running online acting courses and auditions. Ayendi is said to be the first African Pope. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Pope Victor I (reigned 189-199 AD); Pope Miltiades (reigned 311-314 AD): Also known as Melchiades; Pope Gelasius I (reigned 492-496 AD).

It seems like it’s been a long time since we’ve had a serious, suspenseful “big one”; a dramatic film starring big name movie stars.

Ralph Fiennes gives what is his finest performance yet

Well, director Edward Berger, fresh off the Oscar-winning ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022), delivers in his latest film. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted the 2016 film from Robert Harris’ novel, and the result is a welcome audience-pleaser that could garner Oscar attention. And that’s saying a lot for a highly-respected actor who previously starred in films such as SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE PERMANENT GARDEN (2005), WITCHES (2008), BIGGER SPLASH (2018) and MENU (2022). His impressive career is only enhanced by this latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, who has the heavy burden of assisting the titular conclave tasked with electing the new Pope. At the start of the film, the beloved Pope has just passed away… and as they say, “let the games begin.” Of course, these games involve political maneuvering, power struggles, and behind-the-scenes promises.

Director Berger chooses to show us very little actual negotiation, instead giving us various iterations of loyalty during each secret vote (of course). Within the confined walls of Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence’s Most of his time is spent seeking advice, chastising others for their behaviour and dealing with the huge egos of the few he considers (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends he doesn’t want the job and that the campaign is “progressive”; the voice the church needs now. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most determined and ambitious men who may or may not have intentionally undermined another’s work. Sergio Castellitto’s portrayal of Cardinal Tedesco is the most overt in his desire to return the church to the old traditions (the Latin Mass forever!) that he deems appropriate.

He is dazzling and memorable in his limited role

Bryan F O’Byrne plays O’Malley, Lawrence’s assistant, but despite all these men, Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes manages to shoot (figurative) fire out of her eyes. keep your ‘place’ and has a significant impact on the proceedings. Early on comes a big surprise: Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz) of Kabul, who was the last appointee of the previous Pope and was unknown to the others. As a novel, it can turn many pages, but the film never goes from one moment to the next.
